Religious
Education, the journal of the Religious Education
Association: An Association of Professors, Practitioners, and Researchers
in Religious Education, offers a forum for exploring religious identity,
formation, and education in faith communities, academic disciplines
and institutions, and public life and the global community
Articles consider education in houses of worship,
schools, informal programs, and institutions of higher learning
involving adults, youth, children, and families. Topics addressed
include educational theory, theology, and education; tradition and
trends; policy and practice; models and methods; moral values and
character education; sacred texts; and spiritual, cultural and social
issues in education. Religious Education seeks original compositions
in the following three areas:
Articles – Research, scholarship, and
insights from practice relating to the intersection of religion
and education.
Forum – Essays in response to articles
published within the journal.
Critique – Essays and shorter reviews
of significant new titles in books, media, and curricula.
Manuscripts should be typed and double-spaced
on 8 ½ x 11-inch white paper on one side of each page. A 100-word
abstract should accompany each manuscript. Manuscripts and abstracts
should be sent to Jack Seymour, Religous Education, Garrett-Evangelical
Theological Seminary, 2121 Sheridan Rd., Evanston, IL 60201; phone
(847) 866-3900; email: jack.seymour@garrett.edu.
Please submit three hard copies of manuscript and abstract and a
copy of the abstract on disk. Manuscripts that have already been
published or are under review for publication elsewhere will not
be considered.
Length
Manuscripts for articles should not exceed 6,500 words, including
notes and references. Book reviews shall not exceed 1,500 words.
Please use 12-point font and 1 ½ inch (4cm) margins at the top,
bottom, right, and left of every page.
Style
The Chicago Manual of Style (Fourteenth Edition, 1993) should
be used as the style-reference for preparation of manuscripts. Literature
references within the text should use the author-date system described
in Chapter 16; for example, (Curtis 1982); (Jones et al. 187). A
reference to a specific page would appear as (Smith and Jones 1991,
150). If the name of the author appears as part of the narrative
cite only the publication year in parentheses. A reference list
must be included at the end of the manuscript. Entries should follow
the guidelines in section 16.4 and in examples provided throughout
Chapter 16 in the Chicago Manual. Examples follow:
Journal article, one author:
Siejk, Cate. 2001. Awakening the erotic in religious education.
Religious Education 96 (4): 546-62.
Book, one author:
Alexander, H. 2001. Reclaiming goodness: Education and the spiritual
quest. Notre Dame, IN: University of Notre Dame Press.

Explanatory notes should be avoided whenever
possible by incorporating their content into the text. Essential
footnotes should follow the guidelines in sections 16.17, 15.27-34,
and 15-41-43 of The Chicago Manual of Style.
Tables and figures should be numbered and referred
to in the text. Illustrations must be in crisp black and white.
Authors should use gender-inclusive language.
Cover Sheet and Author Identification
The cover sheet should contain the paper title, author’s name, institutional
affiliation, address, phone and fax numbers, and electronic-mail
addresses. The body of the manuscript should bear only the title
of the paper on the first page. Religious Education follows
a double-blind reviewing procedure, in which neither author nor
reviewer knows the identity of the other. To preserve the integrity
of this review process, authors should avoid self-identification
in the text as well as in notes and references.
Accepted Articles
Upon acceptance of a manuscript, the author will be asked to provide
a copy on computer disk and three hard copies of the manuscript.
Authors of published articles are given permission
to photocopy their own article and subsequently to reprint or publish
their articles without royalty charges, provided acknowledgement
of original publication in Religious Education is given.
Responsibility
Contributors bear sole responsibility for the accurate and verified
documentation of all reference material used to support their manuscripts
and contributions.
Religious Education does not pay for
articles; however, three copies of the issue in which the article
appears will be sent to the author.
